Braille Literacy

Developing braille reading abilities helps people who have experienced vision loss to regain their independence.
The Braille Literacy Program provides training to individuals with visual impairments to read and write braille for use in their daily lives, whether it is in the home, at school, or on the job.
The Braille Literacy Program teaches many skills, including…
- Reading one or all the braille codes, including:
- Uncontracted braille
- Contracted braille
- Nemeth Code
- Writing the braille code, using:
- slate and stylus
- braillewriter
- Labeling home items using braille
- Increasing your braille reading speed
- Knowing where to purchase braille supplies
- Knowing where to buy and loan braille books
The braille teacher works with each client to identify his/her unique braille literacy goals and to implement a program to reach those goals.
The Braille Literacy Program’s main goal is to provide clients with the skills necessary to regain independence in the area of reading and writing.
