I have never heard the liability issue used before in connection with this sort of thing. If a blind person comes into your restaurant, you are obligated under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) to make it accessible to him or her. One of those ways is by assisting the blind person through the serving line if necessary. It is easily done, although there are several ways to do it depending on the individual's need for service: :

1. Tell them where the serving line is. They'll walk there themselves and ask other people going through the line for information or assistance if they need it.
2. Walk with them to the serving line and and tell them each item in the steam table. They will carry their own plate and dish up their own food in the quantities they prefer.
3. Using the sighted guide technique described above, lead them to the serving line, tell them each item in the steam table, and dish up what they want in the quantities requested. Either of you will carry the plate while doing that.
4. Tell them each item in the serving line. They'll tell you which items they want and the quantity of each. You go dish up the food and serve it to them on the table.

There are many variations to the above, based on the blind customer's degree of independence and personal preferences. The important thing is that you give them whatever service they need to get the food they want, so they can have a good experience at your restaurant. As a server, that is what you do with everyone anyway. And tell your boss to lose the liability argument, unless he or she relishes having an ADA complaint lodged against your restaurant.

Here it is: Been driving for 20 yrs. Live outside Calgary.Got into fender-bender beg. of November. No injuries, just car damage. Had a heart attack Nov. 10. Got letter from DVM with a form questioning my medical status at time of original accident. Had just got out of hospital, so mailed form back with my DL, and a note saying I would contact them when I found out my medical etc status. Well, have found out I am diabetic, and also my retina is detached in one eye, cannot be fixed, but vision is ok through one eye. Now what should I do to get my license back? I know it will have to be modified as to use, but I need to drive again asap. Any constructive suggestions would be greatly appreciated, as this is tearing me apart, and I don't want to make the wrong move to impede the outcome - I need my driving papers back! Thank you. :)
