2011 Yearend Appeal for Support

December 2011

Dear Friend,

Sight is a precious gift. Those who have lost it know how challenging it can be to live without it. Everyday routines become difficult.Reading, moving around the house and community, preparing a meal, using a computer, or working at a job requires so much more effort without it. For individuals who are blind or visually impaired, learning to adapt is crucial to their well-being.

When people acquire the skills that enable them to live and work independently, it impacts their lives for the better. The Lighthouse for the Visually Impaired and Blind provides vision rehabilitation services that help persons who are experiencing vision loss to achieve their maximum independence and potential. Our services are free because of the generosity of our donors.

You can help. You can make a difference.

Whose lives can you impact when you donate to the Lighthouse for the Visually Impaired and Blind? Children like 1-year-old Lily Grace, and her parents, who are using the Lighthouse Early Intervention Program. Lily is learning to integrate all her senses in order to reach those same developmental milestones that all children must pass through, and to be as prepared as possible for the future. Lily’s story is featured in our Fall 2011/Winter 2012 newsletter. It is titled “Learning to See: A Child’s Journey.”

The Early Intervention Blind Babies Program for children birth to five years of age, is just one of many specialized programs provided by the Lighthouse. Other programs for persons who are visually impaired and blind include:

  • Children’s Program, which provides educational, social and recreational activities to children, age 5 to 13.
  • School to Work Transition Program, which provides teens with training to prepare for independent living, higher education and employment.
  • Job Readiness Program, which helps working aged persons develop the skills needed to succeed in employment.
  • Employment Initiatives, our newest program, which provides actual jobs to persons who are blind.
  • Independent Living Skills Program, which provides individuals of all ages with training in the use of adaptive skills to perform daily living tasks and responsibilities independently, as persons without sight.

Please help us help Lily continue to progress and become more independent as she grows. Your donation can touch her life, and that of many other children, and other persons who are visually impaired or blind, in a deep and meaningful way.

The goal of the Lighthouse is to enhance the lives of persons who are blind or visually impaired by providing services that lead to greater hope, confidence and independence. With your support, many lives can be changed.

A gift of $20, $50, $100, or whatever you can afford, will contribute to meeting the individual needs of children and adults served by the Lighthouse for the Visually Impaired and Blind. There are also other ways you can help. Please visit our How You Can Help page for more information.

Each of us at the Lighthouse for the Visually Impaired and Blind thank you for your generosity and your commitment to empowering those who are blind.

Sincerely,

Sylvia Stinson-Perez, Executive Director
